The presenters for this Regional Retreat are Dr. K. S. Gaind and Dr. S. M. Woodside, the presenters for the International Conferences.

The cultural diversity of modern medical practice is self-evident, yet remarkably little time in medical education is devoted to understanding the role culture plays in the presentation and management of illness. Appreciating and managing cultural issues can make the difference between success and failure in treatment outcomes. The topics for the first day of this conference will focus on relevant issues in cross-cultural psychiatry, including:

  • examination of variations in presentation of major psychiatric illnesses in different cultures
  • cultural underpinnings and influences in the DSM and "western" psychiatry
  • review of the concept of "culture bound syndromes"
  • practice points for dealing with common 'cultural' issues in clinical settings
  • use of the culturally sensitive "explanatory model" in the clinical setting
  • the influence of cultural issues on presentation, diagnosis, and treatment of medical illness

Violence and aggression are serious societal problems affecting large parts of the population. Understanding the dynamics of violence can help in the management of aggression, and assessing risk of recurrent violence and domestic abuse is also an important element in the management of victims of violence. The topics for the second day of this conference will deal with issues in forensic psychiatry and risk assessment, including:

  • review of the risk of violence in psychiatric illnesses, including "myths and realities"
  • review of the characteristics of different types of violence and the dynamics and risk factors of violence and abuse
  • focus on risk assessment of domestic abuse
  • assessment and training in the use of a validated instrument to measure the risk of recurrent domestic abuse in the clinical setting (the instrument is the recently developed ODARA [Ontario Domestic Assault Risk Appraisal] which, although developed in Ontario, is applicable in any clinical setting regardless of locale - by the end of the course, attendees will be able to administer the ODARA in their own practice settings)

There will be 10 hours of CME during this conference. Please contact us for any questions regarding suitable Sections for claiming CME hours under for maintenance of certification credit. Sessions will end before 3 p.m. each day to allow attendees time to enjoy the city.
