We are very pleased to announce the special presenters for this conference, Dr. Larry Librach and Dr. Donna Stewart. Each is a renowned expert in their respective field.

Dr. Larry Librach will be the presenter for the first day. Dr. Librach is Director of The Temmy Latner Centre for Palliative Care at Mount Sinai Hospital, Toronto. He is also the W. Gifford-Jones Professor in Pain Control and Palliative Care at the University of Toronto, where he is a professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine with cross appointments in the Department of Medicine and Department of Public Health Sciences. He is Director of the Cancer Pain Clinic at Toronto Sunnybrook Regional Cancer Centre. Dr. Librach is also Past President of the Ontario Palliative Care Association and Past President of the Canadian Society of Palliative Care Physicians. Dr. Librach has spoken extensively on issues related to palliative care, and won numerous awards for his teaching.

The topics for the first day of this conference will focus on palliative care and pain management, including:

  • medical management of the palliative patient
  • psychological, social, and spiritual issues of death and dying
  • the impact on health care providers of dealing with dying patients
  • ethical and communication issues in palliative care
  • issues in pain management

Dr. Donna E. Stewart will be the presenter for the second day. Dr. Stewart is Chair of Women’s Health at University Health Network and University of Toronto. Dr. Stewart was recently awarded the rare distinction of University Professor, the highest academic honour bestowed by the university [this appointment will come into effect July 1, 2004...congratulations, Dr. Stewart!]. Dr. Stewart is a women’s health researcher, educator, author, advocate and policy advisor nationally and internationally. She is Chair of the Section of Women’s Mental Health for the World Psychiatric Association and is President of the International Association of Women’s Mental Health. She is author of over 200 peer-reviewed publications and 4 books on Women’s Health and Mental Health.

The topics for the second day will focus on women's mental health across the life cycle, including:

  • presentation and treatment of mood, anxiety, and other psychiatric disorders in women across the life cycle
  • post-partum depression and psychiatric disorders during and after pregnancy
  • hormonal and medical factors affecting women's mental health, including effects of the menstrual cycle, perimenopause, and menopause
  • societal issues affecting women's mental health
  • medication management and treatments during different phases of the life cycle

There will be 8.5 hours of CME at this conference. Please contact us for any questions regarding suitable Sections for claiming CME hours under for maintenance of certification credit. Also note that, each day, conference sessions will end before 1 pm to allow ample opportunity to enjoy the surroundings and attend the Elora Music Festival.
